What is Guardian ad Litem?

In Mecklenburg County, there are currently 700 children in the Mecklenburg County Foster Care System.  Some of these children have been abandoned by their parents, others have been subject to abuse or neglect.

Guardians ad Litem (GAL’s) are trained community volunteers who are appointed by the Juvenile Court in North Carolina to represent the best interests of a child involved in a Court proceeding. There are approximately 260 volunteer GAL’s serving in Mecklenburg County.

There is always a strong need for more GAL volunteers.

Please visit The Mecklenburg Guardian ad Litem Program website to find out more about becoming a Guardian ad Litem Program volunteer.

How can I help?

We have several great programs in place to help support the children in foster care as well as the Guardian ad Litem volunteers who support them.  Please visit our programs page or the GAL Program page to find out more!

Beyond the Classroom

The GALA Foundation believes that after-school activities play a significant role in shaping a child's life. The GALA Foundation wants to ensure the foster children of Mecklenburg County have that opportunity. We have established a fund to provide small grants for enrichment opportunities and for educational and personal needs of the foster children in care.
